Crafting away..

Hi everyone!!

Last post  I was cribbing about keeping (the not so little anymore )little one busy during holidays and now I am going to crib about the school reopening ;)
Here it comes....

Its been barely 4 weeks since the school reopened and I am already reeling under the lessons to be taught and the weekly craft activities . Sigh!!
Every week there is a new art activity and a new co-curricular activity. No, I am not against it. But why can't the art teacher make the kids do the art activity in school? Why should it be sent home and then we parents have to supervise the whole thing?  Grumble..grumble..

Last week, the little lady's art teacher gave a list of materials to be arranged for making a portfolio. We purchased the handmade paper, which the teacher had specifically asked for, and sent it along with the other things needed on the prescribed day. An average period in school is 30 to 40 minutes. When daughter came back that evening, all that had been done was fold the handmade paper in the middle...grrr... 30 minutes for folding a paper in the middle???? Then she said, she's supposed to "summit" (submit) it the next week.

Well, it had to be done, right? And that's what has been happening. Both of us looked around for a design and picked what she liked.

One of her classmates had already submitted a folder with a princess's gown and photo pasted for the head. She wanted the same. But I discouraged her saying that would be copying. We found this picture of a cute penguin flying with the help of balloons and she loved it. The balloons gave her the option of pasting her photo within :)

The entire cutting, outlining and pasting was done by her. I gave her company and unsolicited advice ;)

Meanwhile, tomorrow her class has the best out of waste activity. And so I  taught her how to make paper beads from magazine sheets. The only problem - we need to make lots and lots of them for a necklace and this is all we have managed.

Thus goes on my life... did anyone say embroidery?...what's that???

Muaahhhh.. to all my dear readers...having been missing you all...
Love,luck and sunshine,
Deepa

  1. Don't be sad, Deepa. These are simple crafts. My son is bringing home lots of school projects and poor me has to do it for him.I don't see the benefit of these projects. They just copy the information from the internet, stick lots of pictures and then forget everything. It's actually a burden for mothers who themselves are busy.Grrr!

  2. Looks like those beads could already go for a necklace with some knots between them making it longer...:)
Always so busy, dear Deepa - Mums are always - and for ever - busy!
Happy days. with or without stitching!

  4. good to see you back at your blog Deepa even if it is to have a rant! I say lucky you my girls 40 & 37 and granddaugher 15 have done hardly any craft at school, such a shame as they have no interest in stitchery , the eldest does do a little paper craft but would love to share my love of embroidery etc but they are just not interested.

  6. Here in Kerala also the scenario is same, every friday my niece came with a list from his W.E (Work Experience) teacher, his parents runfrom craft shop to craft shop with this list, after getting all, his mother play 2or 3 hrs with the raw materials, atlast she ll create something, the boy wont get satisfied with the end product, he simply say "No amma this not the one teacher wants" a fight will broke out....

My number didnt start yet, my boy is only in LKG.

If the intention is to create an interest in children towards craft activities thereby increasing their patience, concentration etc why new art activities every single week????
one or two activities in a term is enough i think. let them take 30 or 40 mts to folding paper, then the next period for glueing like that.If the children could make a single piece by themselves that ofcourse boost their confidence.

  8. At least you only supervise what your kid is doing, I have to do all by myself. Sometimes I feel there projects are really unnecessary. Kids can't do most of these projects by themselves, so it is only homework for the parents.

  9. Deepa.. most of us passing through this stage, I think. Last week, here my elder son had an exam and Children's day competition on the same day- puppet making, rosette making etc etc. Usually Children's day celebrations are there for 1 week in their school. Good! It happens every year. But along with that, they schedule exams too... so funny.. right? Everywhere... I hope, the same thing happens...
