Pulled thread stitches-Schwalm embroidery

At last!!! I've started the most interesting part of my Schwalm embroidery project- the pulled thread stitches. As described in Luzine's book, I attempted the Wave stitch first. Wave stitch is a very easy pulled thread stitch provided one understands the mathematics behind it. Besides, you need to have better concentration- meaning,no watching TV while stitching :)

Simple as it is, as a first timer I had to read the instructions several times to get the flow and the logic. I did feel the lack of a piece of linen for practice since this is the only piece of white linen I've. All learning will have to be done directly on this pattern.

Did you notice that the outline is double now? That's one of the preliminaries of Schwalm. The first outline of coral knot stitches have to be reinforced with a second outline of chain stitch so that when the threads are withdrawn inside the pattern the outer region remains intact.Wait a minute!! Did I say withdrawing?? Is pulled thread work and drawn thread work different?

Yes they are. In Pulled thread ,we use the stitches to pull the thread of the fabric tightly to show small gaps. Hence it is also known as Drawn Fabric work. In Drawn thread, threads are cut off or withdrawn and then stitching is done. So what is Schwalm embroidery then?

Schwalm is a hybrid of both pulled and drawn thread, because in the above wave stitch pattern I've withdrawn thread and pulled it too :)

I learn the above tidbits while trying to get some more information about wave stitch. All this while I used to think pulled thread and drawn thread are the same.

The tulip has been filled with another stitch called Honeycomb darning stitch. Super concentration needed :)

Here's the full view of the pattern. White on white is a little difficult to be seen clearly. So click on the photographs for a better view.

Iam looking for some Indian fabric options for practicing these stitches. If I find something suitable I'll surely let the world know :)
Thanks for the get better soon comments and mails. The corners of the nails have dried but the index finger does not like extra pressure at the tip. Otherwise everything else is fine.

See ya,
Love,luck and sunshine,
Deepa

  4. Looking good Deepa. Have you worked any double knot stitch yet. That is very good for outlining as well and a strong stitch.
